Daniel Ledbetter - notes on family and guesses as to father
Posted 28 Feb 2020 by Singletary_Patrick52
From the book "Unhallowed Intrusion: A history of Cherokee families in Forsyth County Georgia. Author: Don L. Shadburn
Page 581: The Dougherty children were no exception to this well established pattern of ethnic identity (Whites men marrying indian women) Through maternal lines they introduced Cherokee blood into families of Anglo-American pioneers such as William Willis, Silas Palmour, Daniel Ledbetter, William McClure and John Langley.
Page 657: Cynthia Ledbetter (nee Dougherty) wife of Daniel Ledbetter and a daughter of James Dougherty, jr. and Mary Dean, filed a claim April 9, 1842 in Goingsnake District. She contended that she was due $125 which her father had loaned to a white man named George McDuffie. Also her father had two horses stolen in 1824 by a white man who later returned one of them. However a young mare worth $100 was never recovered from the theif during her fathers lifetime. She said her father had died about 12 years ago.
Another researcher reported that he died "soon after the family arrived in the Indian Territory" from Cholera. However, they arrived in 1833 and 3 out of 4 of his children were born after 1833. The youngest, Sarah Elizabeth Ledbetter, was born in 1839. According to her daughters, Caroline Horn, testimony for Cynthia Jane Horn Taylor's application to the Eastern Cherokee (see story) Cynthia Daugherty Ledbetter left the indian territory in 1845 and moved to Texas where she married Jeremiah Horn. So Daniel Ledbetter must have died between 1838 and 1845.
His grandaughter, Isabella R. Ward said in her application to the eastern cherokee, that he died in 1845.
I am assuming that the Mary Ledbetter in the 1820 Hall county, Georgia census is his mother, John Ledbetter lives next to her, so I am assuming he is a brother to Daniel. As for the father, I have ruled out John Ledbetter and Mary Verner, also Richard Ledbetter and Mary Whiteside. There was a Daniel Ledbetter in nearby South Carolina, but he is still alive in 1820 in South Carolina, so I ruled him out (Mary to be listed in the census, should be a widow.) RMT -July 2010
