About James Duane

James Duane was an American lawyer, jurist, and Revolutionary leader from New York. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, New York state senator, Mayor of New York. President George Washington appointed him as the first U.S. District Judge of New York, and James Duane was a signer of the Articles of Confederation.

His mother is a member of the Dutch Keteltas family that had been in New Amsterdam, a relative "I. Keteltas" had a contemporary estate on the East river, not far from James' property on the Bowery. (see Ratzer 1767 map ) Peter Keteltas' Belleview in Iconography
