About James Pleasant Duncan

James P was a white farmer and lived his life with Mary Mitchell and produced a number of Mulatto children with her. My g grandfather James was one of those children. He was known as James Mitchell and at some point took the Duncan family name. The Mitchell's were obviously free persons of color to have been listed by name on the census records. </line><line /><line>May be buried at the Duncan Family Cemetery, Roxboro, Person Co. NC. James was listed as a Tailor. IN 1850 Census Listed :</line><line /><line>Pg.458, #639, James P. DUNCAN 38 NC farmer $318</line><line /><line> Mary MITCHELL 30 NC MULATTO</line><line /><line> William T. 8, Harry 4 NC MULATTO</line><line /><line> James R. 1 NC MULATTO</line><line /><line>Can’t find him before 1840, was he still living in fathers household? Maybe. His two brothers Giles and Henry are also living next to him in 1850. Despite his living with and fathering children with a Mulatto woman ; he served as a Confederate in the Civil War at age 40. </line><line />
