James Alexander Dye

James Alexander Dye, 90, of Albany died Wednesday at Lydia’s House Mennonite Village.

He was born in Prairie City, the third of five children born to James W. and Florence L. (Sutherland) Dye. The family traveled by covered wagon from Prairie City to Glendale, and then settled in Yaquina. He attended Toledo High School.

In February 1942, James enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S Enterprise in the Pacific until August 1945. The Secretary of the Navy awarded the U.S.S. Enterprise and her attached Air Groups the Navy Unit Commendations for outstanding heroism displayed by her crew in action against enemy Japanese forces and for their role in the Doolittle raid on Tokyo.

On April 28, 1945, James married Jeanette Keiffer in Washington, D.C. After their discharge from the military, James and Jeanette settled in Roseburg, and then Toledo before coming to Albany in 1950.

James worked for Wimer Logging, Consolidated Freightways and Teledyne Wah Chang, retiring in 1974.

James was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Steelworkers Union. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and carpentry.

James is survived by wife Jeanette Dye of Albany; son William Dye of Salem; daughters Jeanette Scott of Salem and Patricia Binnendyk of Wilsonville, and grandchildren Sean Turino, Jamie Cole, Anthony Turino, Jeffrey Binnendyk, Kristine Morris, Timothy Binnendyk, Michael Lehman, Frans Binnendyk, Nathan Dye and Jase Dye. He was preceded in death by daughter Luanne Dye and son James W. Dye.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany, with private burial at Knox Butte Cemetery in Albany. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association in care of AAsum-Dufour Funeral, 805 Ellsworth St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321.
