(Mrs. [James] EVARTS was the daughter of Timothy Todd, Esq., of Guilford Connecticut. Her family came from Yorkshire, England, and was distinguished for literary tastes.
The Evarts family is probably of Huguenot origin; were among the early emigrants to this country, and had resided in Guilford from about the year 1640. James Evarts was a man of uncommon public spirit, and was the first representative in the Legislature of Vermont from the town of Georgia.)
In 1798 the rich promise of Franklin County attracted Mr. [James] Evarts, and he removed thither as one of the original proprietors of the town of Georgia.
