James Thomas Fife was born 3 Mar 1828 in Alleghany Co., Pennsylvania to William and Mary (Thomas) Fife. His siblings were: Lydia, William H., Nancy Jane, Martha and twins Josiah and Samuel. His father died when he was about fourteen years of age.
The Fife family attended First Presbyterian Church in Alleghany County, Duquesne, Pennsylvania.
James attended Washington College. He bought and sold some properties and also sold books. He worked as a Government detective during the Mexican War and served with the Indiana Regiment Jessersons Gray.
His was married first to Elizabeth Schafer, daughter of Michael and Margaret Schafer in 25 Nov 1852. They had eight children: Lawrence, Andrew, Arthur, Olive, Michael, James and Bertha. Elizabeth died in Oct. 1881.
James married his second wife in Aug of 1882, Mrs. Mary (Mofford) Mitchell of Brown County, Ohio. They had a child, Bessie B. who was born in 1887 and died in 1888.
James died 14 January 1899 at age 69 yrs. and is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Adams Co., Iowa.
