About James Foss

James Foss is buried in the Foss Lot on McKenney Road, Saco, next to his wife Mary and the family of his son Walter (1791-1869). His gravestone is inscribed "James Foss died September 19th 1837, ae 88". When his children were born, James self reported his birthdate as 10 Apr 1749. He spent his entire life in Saco.

James was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, enlisting in December 1775 under Capt. Hooper, and serving until 30 November 1776. He later received a pension. In an affidavit filed on 7 June 1832, James Foss, "a resident of Saco, age 83", stated that although he was "born in Scarborough, his parents soon after moved to Saco where he lived when he first entered the service, and, after service, where he now resides." He also stated that he "was born April 10, 1749. He has a record of his age in his house at home in Saco, in a Bible." Additionally, he gave the names of Stephen Atkinson of Buxton and Walter Foss of Saco as "persons who know him and his character for truth and veracity."

PLEASE NOTE: James Foss was the son of Walter Foss Jr. and his wife Hannah (Carle) Foss (married 1748). He was NOT the son of James and Abigail (Hill) Foss.
