James was the supervisor of the Allegheny State Park, New York until 1886.
James is enumerated in the 1865 census at Salamanca, New York living with his parents, age 21 and his occupation is farmer. James served during the Civil War with the famous 154th New York volunteer infantry known as the "HardTack" regiment Co. I. The regiment left for the South in September 1862.The New Yorkers were attached to the Army of the Potomac. James was in the Infantry. He applied for and received his pension at the early age of 30, the same year son William is born. He was taken prisoner during the war, later released.
