James Gilbert of Richmond County, Virginia was the husband of Mary Smoot, daughter of William Smoot of Charles County, Maryland.
It is known that Mary had three daughters, but it is unclear whether James Gilbert was their father.
There was a lot of court testimony related to his will, which was probated in June 1704. Apparently it left everything to his wife, but he had written an earlier will which had left everything to John Mills, who seems to then have pilfered Gilbert's chest, which was at Mills' residence, as Gilbert was living apart from his wife.
