About James E. Goins
Fought for the Union in the Civil War in Company C, 17th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. He enrolled and mustered in on August 29, 1864 at Barnesville, Ohio with the rank of private. He served with his regiment until December 2, 1864, when he was sent to a military hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where he died on June 25, 1865. The exact cause of his death was not listed.
NOTE
There was a James Gaines in Company K, 16th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry who likewise died in Nashville, Tennessee. Gaines died on 27 Apr 1864 of Pneumonia. It should be noted that James Gaines is not the same individual as James E. Goins. The two of them appear to often be confused in other online family trees.
