About James Graham Handy
James, the seventh living child of Charles and Mary was possibly "disadvantaged". He was born in 1837 and died December 24, 1919. He never married. In Charles' will, money was to be set aside to give James up to $400.00 per year for his upkeep and the use of the bit of land and house in Essa Township. Charles did not believe James was capable of handling his own affairs. A few years later, there was a small item in the paper about James going to court to force the executors (his three brothers) to give him the full $400.00 because they were giving him only $150.00 per year. It is not known whether he won his case. James ran afoul of the law when his housekeeper's daughter and her boyfriend were borrowing James' horse and buggy to steal pickles, butter, silverware and whatever they could find from the neighbours root cellars. Lilly, age 15 was sent to Mercer Reformatory for Women as was her mother; the boyfriend suddenly left town; it is not known what happened to James. James lived his final years almost blind with Josiah. After James' death, Josiah bought a five-grave plot in Barrie Union Cemetery to bury him. There lies James in a huge unmarked burial plot, all alone. The above information has been taken from a report by the Genealogy World, 998 Douglas Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105, Researched by Lillian Bowdery in 1980.
