JAMES W. JACOBS
Mr. James W. Jacobs was born on May 2, 1852 in Indiana. Mathilda Ann (Oakley) Jacobs was born on August 14, 1859 probably in Illinois. They were married in 1875 in Bargersville, Indiana. They arrived in Blair in the early 1900's from Omaha and began operating the Depot Store here. It was located across from the present Chicago Northwestern Depot. Most travel then was done by train. The Depot Store a grocery store, had a lunch counter. Mrs. Jacobs made home-made pies and sold lunch to the people alighting from the train. Local farmers brought their cream by horse and wagon to the depot where it was sent by train to various creameries. At one time the Jacob's son Earl also operated the Depot Store. The Clifton Hotel in this same area was in operation during this time. Mrs. Christine Fick had a rooming house east of the store where she kept weary travelers. Her house is still there. After selling the Depot Store, Mr. Jacobs went into the real estate business and also the roofing business. At one time he farmed in the Desoto area and also farmed north of Blair. Mrs. Jacobs was active in the Blair Methodist Church. When the ladies aid met at the church, the women made and quilted many quilts. The Depot Store was torn down in the 1930's. There is now a vacant lot where it stood. The Jacobs children were Lester, Jennie, Earl, Ray, Roy and Verna. The daughter Jennie Antill Brown was the owner and operator of the store "Antill's Grocery" in the 1920's. It was located where the present Steward's Market is situated. She being a widow, raised her family of four daughters there. They were: Mildred Antill Gasser, Arline Antill Shock, Helen Antill Munk and Georgia Antill Matzen. Other grandchildren of James W. Jacobs who still live around Blair are: Frances Jacobs King, Evelyn Jacobs Davis and Virgil Jacobs. --Submitted by Georgia (Antill) Matzen
