About James John O'Shee

House on Census Form: Bellevue Place (Clonmel East Urban, Tipperary) 1901 Census - Occupation - Member of Parliament, Solicitor of Undergrad Royal View of Ireland (stud farm)

Listed as O'Shee in 1901 Census - Newtown (rest of family listed as Shee)

(The following is information about his father, as told by Vincent O'Shee)

James John O'Shee went to Rockwell College and Blackrock College, Dublin. Then he went to National University Dublin. He became a solicitor.

He entered Parliment in London, in 1895 and remained in Parliment as a member of the Parlimite Party from that date until 1918.

Every week during the sessions of Parliment in London, J. J. would travel from Newtown, Carrick-on-Suir, to the Parliment in London, via horse and cart, train from Carrick to Waterford, boat from Waterford to Fishguard and a train to London. And then be present in Parliment from Monday to Friday. Then traveled back to Carrick-on-Suir.

When he was defeated in the election of 1918 by Cathal Brughaha. Cathal was later shot in Dublin during the Black n Tan's War of 1920.

J.J. O'Shee would live in London for six months of each year for 18 years for the Parliment. ... While in London, he went to the christening of John McCormack, the famous Irish Tenor's, son. He also met Winston Churchill, Lloyd George (he was the Prime Minister of England before Churchill). James John was apparently the secretary of the Irish Parlimentary Party and a staunch member of John Redman's Party in London. John Redman's Party was the off-shoot of Charles Stuart Parnell's Party. Charles Stuart Parnell had an affair with Kitty O'Shea, the wife of a member of Parliment from Galway, an O'Shea, no relation to us.

James John was told that his heart (health) wasn't very good, so he retired. But lived on for 20 years. He invested in the English stock market every day. Vincent, who might have been aged 10 or 11, or one of the other children would take the stock market orders to the post office nearly everyday. He did well in the stock market. He was in deteriorating health.
