Civil War Union Brevet Major General. In Brooklyn on April 18, 1861, he enlisted in the 14th New York Militia. He was commissioned Major, 84th New York Volunteer Infantry on May 23, 1861, Lieutenant Colonel, 56th New York Infantry on December 19, 1861 and Colonel, 158th New York Volunteer Infantry on September 5, 1862. For gallant and meritorious service in the attack on the Confederate works at Fort Harrison, Virginia he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on October 28, 1864. For gallant and meritorious service during the war, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and resigned from the Union Army on March 17, 1865.
