About James K.P. Atwood

Excerpt from " Life in Dover" p.59 & 60;

Perhaps the most articulate of the town's music-lovers was James K. Polk Atwood, who lived with his wife, Mary, first in the old Weston farm, later in the second house north of the post office in West Dover. James Atwood was a folk singer. "I'm not what you'd call a regular singer, you know, for I never learned by book nor saw othin writ down. But I've allus sung just cause I can't help it. My father was the same and my grandfather too." James Atwood sang old Scottish and English ballads as handed down in his family, such as "The Spinster's Lament," "Mary of the Wild Moor," "The Soldier's Return," and a dozens others, all rescued for publication by hes firend and benefactor, Mrs. S. Warren Sturgis. ("Tunes collected by Edit Barnes Sturgis and set to music by Robert Hughes" (Boston, 1919)
