About James M. Wallace

Civil War, & Black Hawk War

!BD, BP, Sp, Ch, DD: Civil War pension file of James Wallace, Co E 77 Ohio Infantry, Invalid App. #41.267 (rejected).

His widow and daughter Mary E. (Wallace) West later applied for pensions, and these applications were rejected, too.

BUT the file contains a lot of family data as a result of these applications.

!MD, MP, Sp: Belmont Co OH Probate Court Marriage Record, 5:299.

!According to his own statement in his pension file, he came to Belmont County, Ohio, in 1819. This would have been

when he was 13 years old, so presumably he came with a parent or older sibling.

!1860 U.S. Census, Belmont Co OH, Mead Twp, p.461, dw.276, fam.253, family of James (55), Jane (46), Robert (16),

George (14), Elizabeth (11), "Eliza" (10), Isabell (8), Andrew (2).

!BD, BP, DD, DP, Bur, Service details: "In Memoriam," obituary of James Wallace, unnamed Marietta, OH, newspaper,

about 15 Feb 1887. "DIED--At Rood, O., Feb 11, A.D. 1887, Mr. James Wallace, aged 82 yrs. 1 m. 11 d. Mr. W. was born

in Waynesburg ,Green county, Pa., Dec. 1, 1803. He enlisted in the Black Hawk war, A.D. 1830, and was discharged in

1832. Also, he enlisted in the U.W. war in 1861, and was discharged in 1863. "He was the father of the nine children,

of whom three are dead; he had 21 grandchildren. Father Wallace was not a member of any church, but left a very bright

testimony. He has gone home to rest with the just on the other shore. I would just say to his children if you do not

know Christ by the pardon of your sins, seek him soon. "Mr. W. lost his eyesight in the U.S. service, but never

received a pension, as the Government thought he did not need one, and I think it no more than just that the Government

should pay his funer expenses and erect a tomb stone to his memory. "He was interred in Mt. Zion U.B. Church cemetery

on February 13th, and the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.W. Kinney, pastor of Beech Grove circuit. Bro. Wallace

was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of friends." Notes: Rood was later called Cornerville in

Marietta Twp., Washington Co., Ohio. Mt. Zion Cemetery is in Lawrence Twp., and James's son George W. Wallace is also

buried there. I have found mention of three churches in Newport Twp. that are called Beech Grove: Baptist, Methodist,

and Presbyterian. Methodists rode circuits, but maybe others did, too.
