Obituary: Man Lived 26 Years After Legs Cut Off -- James Vance Mack, 54, Met Terrible Accident Near Fieldmore in 1911 -- Passed Away Yesterday -- James Vance Mack, aged 54 years, 6 months and 27 days, former resident of Steuben township near Tryonville, died at his home in Waterford township, Erie county, at 1:30 p.m. yesterday, after an illness of a year and a half. He lived with his father, William S. Mack, and brother, Lee Mack, and they had resided on the farm near Tyronville until last fall, when they sold it and moved to Erie county. Mr. Mack enjoyed a wide acquaintance as he had been a chef for a number of construction companies.
On October 24, 1911, he had both his legs cut off when he was run over by a street car near Fieldmore Springs. Besides his father and brother mentioned above, the deceased leaves two sisters: Mrs. M.B. Titzel and Mrs. Carlton Randall of Erie and a brother, Ernest Mack of Erie. The following brothers preceded him in death: Emil of Painesville, Ohio; Earl of Garland; Simmons of Titusville and Winslow at the homestead in Steuben township. A sister, Mrs. Harry (Ada Ellen Mack) Preston, died in Titusville about 3 years ago. The body was removed to the Willis L. Arnold funeral home in Townville to be prepared and from which place services in his memory will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. M.M. Clark will officiate. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery.
