About James Wesley Mackey
GEDCOM Note
He had gone to South Dakota, filed on a homestead and returned to Missouri and brought back with him his younger brother, Marion Scott. At that time there was mostly open range, very few fences. All cattlemen let their branded cattle run and then would all get together for a round-up and separate their brands. That spring they had elected Wes Mackey as "Boss of the round-up." They had grouped the cattle near the Cheyenne River. A severe thunderstorm cam up. The men were afraid the cattle would break away and scatter, so all were riding hard to keep them together. Wes and his horse were killed instantly by lightening.
