The death of Mr. James Mahoney which occurred at his home here on Sunday, August 28, marked the passing of one of the Township of Mara's pioneer settlers. Mr. Mahoney was born in the County of Waterford, Ireland, in the year 1836. When twelve years of age he emigrated to Canada with his parents, crossing the ocean in a sailing vessel, which occupied six weeks and three days in the passage. He settled with his parents on the farm on which he resided at the time of his death, witnessing the transformation of this part of the country from a vast wilderness to the present state of its development. On November 26, 1868, he was married to Miss Ann Dissette, daughter of the late John Dissette, of Medonte township. Besides his widow, deceased leaves to mourn his loss four daughters and two sons: Mrs. P. Cosgrove, Mrs. Frank Clark, Mrs. John Duffy, all of Uptergrove, Mrs. Edward Collins, Orillia; James, Uptergrove, and Richard, at home. Three children predeceased him. One sister also remains, Mrs. Lane, Atherley. Mr. and Mrs. Mahoney celebrated their golden wedding three years ago when a family reunion took place. A kind and loving husband and father, a hospitable and faithful neighbor and friend, Mr. Mahoney held the esteem and good will of the entire community as was evidenced by the large and sympathetic funeral procession which took place from his late residence on Tuesday morning to St. Columbkill's church. Requiem High Mass was sung by Rev. Father Carberry, Orillia, assisted by Rev. Father Clare, after which the remains were interred in the family plot. The pallbearers were Hugh Gallivan, Alex.Steele, Michael Dolan, John Healy, Patrick Mahoney and John McIsaac. Those froma distance attending the funeral were Brother Gerald, from De La Salle College, Aurora, a grandson of the deceased, formerly Roy McIsaac, Orillia; Mr. and Mrs. R. Dissette, Toronto; Mr. J. J. Dissette, Detroit; Mr. Joseph Dissette, Buffalo; Mr. J. T. Gunn, Toronot; Mr. Thos. Mahoney, Gravenhurst; Mr. Thos. McDonald, Toronto, and Mr. D. J. O'Donnell, Oshawa.</p>
