About James Richard Marchant

JAMES RICHARD MARCHANT (1847-1941) During J E Harrison's visit to England in circa 1937 he was accompanied by his wife Kate Caroline Marchant & Barbara Harrison their daughter. They went for three months and visited Freshford in Somerset, where James Richard Marchant, Kate's father was staying with Mary Male & her family. On May 6th 1993, Mrs Barbara Bladen wrote : "I loved Glastonbury & the ruin of The Abbey--- a central spot was cordonned off around what is supposed to be King Arthur's & Queen Guinevere's graves. I remember the guide showing us The Holy Thorn, grown from Joseph of Aremathea's staff that he thrust into the ground & it took root! He was sent to England by St Philip to spread Christianity--- but I expect your guide told you all this. I was so impressed when we took Grandfather James Marchant with us " . One day, John Harrison drew a rough pencil sketch of his father-in-law & worked on it further in 1937, making photo copies of this portrait.

James Richard Marchant was highly skilled and made some wrought-iron screens for St Peter's Church in Freshford. {source: Barbara Bladen} Alternate death date: April 24 th 1941, Suzan Sosic.
