About James Benjamin Mason
James married Nannie T. Byars at Johnson County, Texas on 29 December 1881. They were the parents of a daughter, Nannie, and of sons Charles, Elmer and Willis E. Mason. His wife, Nannie, passed away in 1892.
On October 25, 1894, James married Janie A. Heeth at Johnson County, Texas; this marriage brought him three daughters: Vera, Erin and Jim.
James moved to the Oklahoma Territory in 1902. He was a farmer who also interested himself in local politics and was elected as a member of the Duncan city council in 1905. In 1907 he campaigned for county commissioner. Upon his election, he was chosen as the chairman of the commission and had "the honor of having served as the first chairman of the first board of commissioners of Stephens county" (from "A History of the State of Oklahoma Vol II" by Luther B. Hill).
