James Mays

James' first child, Charles Mays, was born circa 1821 and died, according to family about 1862.

After the death of James' son Thomas. Thomas' youngest son Jasper is listed on the 1870 U.S. census for Searcy County living with his Grandfather James.

JAMES MAYS was born 1797 in North Carolina, USA and died around 1878 in Arkansas. He married (1) NERVY ADAMS Abt. 1820 in Tennessee. She was born 1798 in Tennessee, and died Abt. 1845 in possibly Missouri. He married (2) CATHARINE COOTS Abt. 1846 in Arkansas. She was born 1808 in Tennessee. 

He married (3) PERMELIA ANN Abt. 1858 in Arkansas. She was born 1821 in Tennessee.

Notes for JAMES MAYS:

An article in "History and Folklore of Searcy County", Arkansas stated that James Mays, grandfather of William S. Mays, whose father was John Mays, "came to Searcy County when the country was primitive and located in the vicinity of St. Joe where he spent the rest of his life as an honest and industrious farmer and blacksmith. He died

in 1876 at the age of eighty-five. He married five times and reared four different families of children, twenty-one in all. He was a Democrat politically and a devout member of the Methodist Church, and was of Irish ancestry.
