About James Henry McCourt
James Henry built a home in St. Croix Falls on what is now McKenny Rd. JH was elected first president of the newly incorporated village of St Croix Falls, WI. He sold the house to the McKenny family after Nettie's death in 1889 before he followed his sons, Clinton and Charles, move west to Alaska for the Klondike Gold Rush.
After leaving Alaska, James settled in Sequim in 1905 and became postmaster and one of the most prominent citizens of the East End. He was recognized as a most efficient public official devoting himself to serving the public. He was a very public spirited citizen who ended a long, useful life in surroundings which he not only liked but where the people recognized in him a man of lovable qualities. He was a Mason for fifty-six years and his funeral was held at the Masonic lodge.
James was born in New York State and went to Sand Lake, Wisconsin while a boy. He married in Minnesota and had seven children. In his early life he was engaged in the mercantile business. later in the lumber business under the firm name of McCourt Brothers. In 1973, he went into the newspaper game operating the St Croix Valley Standard of St. Croix, Wisconsin. He was very active in County and State politics and served two terms as a member of the Wisconsin legislature from Polk county.
