James Lorenzo Morgan was the eldest son of Richard Morgan and Sophia W. Jones, and was raised at "Shady Grove" Plantation near the modern village of Gladys, Virginia. He came to Missouri as a young man in 1859, and worked as a tobacconist. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he served as the Captain of the Glasgow Guards, the local state militia unit. He commanded his men at a skirmish at nearby Fristoe's Farm, and was later ambushed while escorting Federal officers between Glasgow and the county seat at Fayette. After this, James Lorenzo took his family to live in Brooklyn, New York, and await the end of the war. When the fighting stopped, he returned to Glasgow and purchased a farm in rural Howard County where he died a relatively young man after a brief bout with pneumonia.
