James Lee Nelson was a son of John M. Nelson and Elizabeth Pen(d)ley Nelson. He was actively involved in many phases of industry and civic duty. Early in his life he worked as a teacher and a photographer, but his yearnings were toward management, and he became involved with the Hudson Cotton Mill.
He was co-owner of a mill in what was to become known as the community of Whitnel, NC, created from the names White-Nelson.
James Lee Nelson surved as a comissioner in 1889, was president of a local Citizens' Building & Loan, and served in the state legislature four times. He was vice-president of Gym Vaneer & Panel Company.
On a lighter note, he once judged a jousting tournament in Caldwell County.
He was married on 22 December 1886 to Emily Adelia Scroggs. Their children were J. Lee Nelson, Andrew Scroggs Nelson, John Boone Nelson, and Mary Lee Nelson.

- ********** From the Gastonia Gazette of December 3, 1936: ifr. J. L. NELSON Friends of Mrs. D. Robertson LaFar will regret to learn of the death of her father, Mr. J. L. Nelson, which occurred at his home in Lenoir this morning at 11 o'clock,, following a long and serious illness. He was 84 years of age.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First Methodist church of Lenoir, with Rev. c. E. Rozzelle, former pastor, and Rev. J. S. Hyatt, pastor of the Lenoir Methodist church in charge. Burial , will be In the Lenoir cemetery.
Mr. Nelson was one of the most prominent business men in Lenoir and Caldwell county until his retirement some years ago. He was at the head of a number of textile plants in the county and had had wide experience as a merchant and in other business enterprises. He had served as mayor of Lenoir, as a member of the county commis- sioners of Caldwcll county, as a member of the city council, had served in both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly, as a member of the board of trustees of N. C. State College, Woman's College. Davenport College, the Children's Home at Winstoh'-Salem, and as a member ot important committees of the Western North 'Carolina Methodist conference. He was the "grand old man" of Lenoir. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Emily Scroggs. and the folowing children, Messrs, Andrew and John B. Nelson, and Mrs. LeFiir, of Gastonia. Another son, J. Lee Nelson, jr., died some years ago, He was once a resident of Gastonia.
Many Gaston county people will attend the funeral in Lenoir Friday afternoon.
