James was living with his daughter Jolana Emily (Newberry) and Henry Winager and their family when he was 89 years old. The 1880 US Census for Grove, Pottawattamie County, Iowa shows him and the family listed when the census was taken June 26, 1880. James died two weeks later on July 10, 1880 in their home.
