About James Newton

James Newton was born at the family homestead on Christian St. in Hartford, Vermont according to Newton family oral tradition of the following generation. He did not want to be a farmer like his grandfather, father, and two older brothers, Frederick and Edward. James moved to Manchester, New Hampshire and became a machinist. He met the woman he later married, Margaret Turnbull, in Manchester. James owned and operated a machine shop. During WWI he made parts for torpedoes. One photos of him in his machine shop exists.

James and Margaret owned three cabins on Hampton Beach, two of which they rented out. The family spent many summers there clamming and swimming. Margaret's brother visited with his children. Although James visited his brothers in Hartford, Margaret and the children rarely traveled back north.
