About James Ordway

James Ordway first appeared in over, NH about 1640, where he was granted land and paid taxes as late as 1649, although he had moved to Newbury, MA a year or two before.

In Newbury, his house was near the Merrimac River, at the foot of Ordway's Lane, now Market Street, Newburyport, on a small plot of land of five acres.

He appears to have owned a number of canoes and it was believed he was engaged in lighterage. In his diary, Judge Sewall, speaks of having been taken ashore by "the aged Ordway in his canoe."

He was admitted a freeman of the colony (e.g. had the right to vote for governor and representative) on April 19, 1668.

He took an active part in the controversy between the church and its pastor, siding with the church, for which offense he was fined.

He frequently served as juryman and also held minor town offices.

He married Ann Emory on November 25, 1648. They had eleven children.

  • James Ordway was of Welsh extraction. In what year he came over I have been unable to discover. He was born about 1620. He was in Newbury at an early date, having become well established there before November 23, 1648, when he married Ann Emery, a daughter of John Emery, the first. He took no part in civic affairs, and his name seldom appears in the town records save as attending town meeting occasionally. He was, perhaps, of a quiet peaceable disposition, disinclined for controversy of any kind. This is indicated by the fact that he was among the first to obey the royal mandate to take the oath of allegiance in 1668, which was so stubbornly con- tested by many of your Newbury ancestors, and then, again, to be doubly sure that he was in the royal grace he took the oath again in 1678, on which later occasion he gave his age as "about sixty." ..... etc.

  • James Ordway was still alive in 1704, an old man over eighty years old. His wife, Ann, had died in 1687. Their son, John Ordway, your ancestor, who was born in 1658, was just twenty when, under his father's advice, doubtless, he took the oath of allegiance. He did not, however, inherit the non-combative qualities of his father, and yet, save that he is sometimes designated as "Sergeant" Ordway, which indicates military service, the scope of his activities so far as the .... etc.
