Armorial Ensigns

In December 1747 the Lord Lyon King of Arms in Scotland granted Armorial Ensigns to James Paisley of Craig. The blazon is described as follows:

"Azure, on a chevron between three roses Argent, as many thistles Vert" The Crest above the shield is a right arm clad in armour from the shoulder, grasping a dagger, all in natural colours. The Motto is "Be Sure". [Journal of the Paisley Family Society, Volume I (May 1989. page 23]

Memorial

Charles Pasley, the youngest son of James Pasley of Craig and his wife Magdalen Elliot, placed a stone in memory of his parents in the wall of the church at Westerkirk. It was later restored bt Sir Rodney Marshall Sabine Pasley. The memorial stone reads as follows:

"In memory of James Pasley, Esq., of Craig, who died 13th April 1773, aged 78. An of his spouse, Magdalen Elliot, of Middlemiln, who died 24th Sept. 1757, aged 57 years. During 31 years in wedlock they were blessed with 7 sons and 4 daughters. Their many virtues secured to them a degree of felicity rarely enjoyed in this world. Their conjugal affection was only equalled by their love of their children and care in forming their principles. In commemmoration of which this is errected by their youngest son, Charles Pasley, 1780." Journal of the Paisley Family Society, Volume I (May 1989. page 24]

James Pasley of Craig married Magdalen Elliot Scotland Marriages Their request for public proclamation was booked at Langholm in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on 1 January 1726, and they were married on 21 January following. The booking reads as follows: "Janr 1 1726 James Pasley & Mrs Magdalen Eliot sister to Midlem mill gave up their names & being orderly proclaimed were married Januar 21" [National Records of Scotland, Langholm Marriages, 1668-1819, reference OPR.839/2].
