Indiana Township

Indiana Township was created in 1805 from Deer Township. Originally it included what is now O'Hara and Harmar (1875), and parts of East Deer (1836), Hampton (1847), and Shaler (1860). The first settlers were Jacob Huddle and Henry Strohm. Jacob Weaver, Jacob Bave, and Daniel Sweeney were also early settlers. William Marshall, Robert Black, John McKee, James Patterson, Samuel McClellan, James Quinett, Peter Neff, John Eward, George Snyder, Elijah Brooks, James Powell, David Stewart, and Thomas McWilliams were residents prior to 1820.

St. Clair Township

St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was one of the original townships created with the incorporation of Allegheny County in 1788. The township included most of Allegheny County south of the Monongahela River.

  • In 1812 James Patterson built his factory in Birmingham for the manufacture of locks of all sizes, files, hinges, etc. In 1815 James Patterson made locks of all sizes, coffee-mills, saddlers' buckles, etc. In 1825 J. and J. Patterson, Jr., of Birmingham, made locks, latches, bolts, knobs. In 1837 Harris' Directory reported J. and J. Patterson employed 20 hands with annual revenue of $150,000.
  • James Patterson bought "land in the town of Birmingham on the south side of the Mongahela River in St. Clair twp., Allegheny co., PA" in 1814. "I, Ebenezer Beatty, the grantee within named & Sarah, my wife for $95 paid

by James Patterson of Birmingham, Alleg., Co., PA, locksmith...." (Allegheny County Deeds, vol. 19, p. 390, recorded 24 May 1814)

  • 1817: "The electors of that part of St Clair township, within the following bounds, to wit : Beginning-on the Monongahela river, at the mouth of Street's run, thence down the said river to the mouth of Chartier's creek on the Ohio river, thence up the said creek to include John Bell's, from thence to Willet's on Street's run, (including the farms of Robert Hays and James Brison) and thence down the said run to the place of beginning, (being made a separate election district) are to meet at the house of James Patterson, (lock-smith,) Birmingham, in the said township." (Pittsburgh Weekly Gazette, September 16, 1817, p. 4).
  • 1825: The Democratic delegates of Allegheny County met at the courthouse on June 7, 1825. The following persons were appointed a committee of correspondence for the ensuing year: Charles Saler, Charles Craig, Ross Wilkins, John Sampson, Robert Hilands, James Patterson (of Birmingham), David Coon, Francis McClure, Thomas Brown (of Moon), Samuel Hamilton, J. H. Sewell, Thomas Gibson, and John Spear.

Baldwin Township

In 1850 he was living in the household of James Wallace (44) and Jane (Irwin) Wallace (40) in Allegheny county. He is not known to have been related to either of them.

Mifflin Township

He was perhaps the elder of the two James Pattersons in Mifflin Township in 1840. Baldwin Township, his residence in 1850, was created in 1844, from Upper St. Clair, Lower St. Clair, Jefferson, and Mifflin townships. The 1840 census of Allegheny county shows:
