A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A091842

JAMES POTTS entered military service in 1776 in Captain James Purviance's Company of Francis Locke's Rowan Regiment. Under General Rutherford, they marched to Cross Creek arriving there just after the American victory at Moore's Creek Bridge ( Feb. 27, 1776 ). they aided in conveying prisoners, etc., and returned to Salisbury in March, 1776. " " His second tour of duty was as a drafted wagoner under Colonel Brevard. He entered in November 1778 and marched to teh Santee River section of S. C. , arriving there just before Christmas. They marched to "Smoky Camp" on the Savannah River an dwee engaged in keeping the British "in check" on the opposite side of the river. Afer the American defeat at Brier Creek ( March 3, 1779 ), they retreated with the forces of General Rutherford. He was discharged shortly thereafterwards. "

" His third tour of duty was again under Captain Purviance of Colonel Francis Locke's Regiment. He had volunteered in Rowan County, though living in Burke County at the time. He entered in December 1780 and marched to the High Rock Ford of the Haw River. From there they marched to Alamance Creek, joining the army of General Nathaniel Greene. he mentioned the death of Major Micajah Lewis of Surry Co., N. C. in a skirmish at Alamance. He was discharged, just before the Battle of Gulford Courthouse ( March 15, 1781 ). "James Potts applied for Revoluntionary War pension in Williamson Co., Tenn. in 1833 at age 76. He was awarded $31.66 per annum."
