About James Renshaw

James Renshaw (b. 1815) married Ellen Knight (b. 1838) on 27 April 1858, in Dean, Lancashire. James was twenty-three years older than Ellen. On their marriage certificate, James Renshaw’s father’s name was William and Ellen Knight’s father’s name was James. Ellen Knight was of Stourport in Worcestershire.
James Renshaw was of High Broughton, Manchester, a flax spinner. He probably ran his own business because when he died in 1860 aged 44 or 45, he was worth between £60,000 and £70,000. The cause of his death is not known. Before his death, James and Ellen had a daughter, Edith Ann, born in High Broughton, Manchester, probably in the latter half of 1859.
1861 Census the Renshaws were living at 9 Brandon Lodge in the civil parish of Leamington Priors. Ellen Renshaw, aged 23, is listed as “Head”, “Widow”. Edith aged 1, and William and Ernest are just three months old.
1871 Census, the Renshaws had moved to Cheltenham, where they were living at 39 Clarence House. In the interim, in fact during the second quarter of 1870, Ellen Renshaw had remarried. According to the 1871 Census, her second husband was Edward Spencer Meara (born 1831), of County Waterford in Ireland. Edward was a Commander in the Royal Navy. The children Edith, William and Ernest are all listed as “scholars”.
1881 Census 20 year old Renshaw twins, William in particular, were on the verge of their initial greatest successes at tennis, or lawn tennis, as it was known in those days. Between the years 1871 and 1881, they had acquired two step-sisters, Ida (b. 1872) and Nellie (b. 1876). Both of these girls were given their father’s surname, Meara, but William and Ernest, and, probably, their sister, Edith, retained their biological father’s surname, Renshaw.
Their mother, Ellen, had taken her second husband’s surname, Meara, on marriage. However, by the time of the 1881 Census, Ellen Meara was dead. Her death is recorded as having occurred in Kensington, London, during the first quarter of 1881. The cause of death is not known.
