Civil War Record of James Woods Rhodes, Union Soldier

On 1 Aug 1861, James W. Rhodes was enrolled in the Union Army at Kirksville, Mo as a Private in Co. H. 7th Mo. Cavalry for a term..... He was discharged at Little Rock, Ark. He joined for three years duty, uses his own horse. 3 Jan 1864; he also served in Co. L, 1st Mo. Cav., last discharge 16 Aug 1865. He was appointed Corp. 3 June 1864.

paid 1 dec 1863, $38.28 advanced for clothing and Bounty due =$402, also an old bounty of  $100.  He was given a furlough.
He was captured at Moro or morrow Bottom (Salem River) Mo.  25 Apr 1864 by the Confederates; he remained in the ha.... at Ft. Tyler, TX as a prisoner of war until 1 may 1965 when he escaped.  In a memorandum from Prisoner of War records it is said he was paroled and escaped from Red River, LA  27 May 1865.  He rejoined his regiment 3 Jul 1865, entitled to three months pay.... clothing account $25.28 and (this repeats) Bounty due =$402, also an old bounty of  $100.

David Hardisty gives this account of James Rhodes; He was a union soldier in the Civil War, was taken prisoner and escaped. He made his way to the house of an old negro and she hid him under the floor- went out and sifted cayenne pepper in his tracks so could not track him to her door. Was able to reach Union lines and was saved. He settled in the old homestead in Harrison Township and farmed- also had the post office known as Crisp- Cross- Roads for many years- also made brooms.
