Born in Georgia the son of William and Rachael Rice. A farmer all of his life he married first to Ellen Sparks January 21, 1830 in Newton County, GA. Together they were eleven siblings. 1) Nancy Rice b: 1831 in Newton County 2) Benjamin Rice b; Oct. 11, 1832 in Newton County 3) Francis Marion Rice b: Jan. 19, 1836 in Newton County 4) Appling Rice b: 1839 in Newton County 5) John Rice b: 1841 in Newton County 6) Sanford Rice b: 1843 in Newton County 7) Lougenia Rice b: 1845 in Newton County 8) James Riley Rice b: 1847 in Newton County 9) Georgianne Rice b: 1849 in Newton County 10) Elia E. Rice b: Mar. 6, 1851 in Powder Springs, Cobb County 11) Ellen Jane Rice b: Jul. 18, 1854 in Powder Springs, Cobb County After the death of Ellen in January of 1866 James married a second time, Sarah T. Jones on May 20, 1866 in Cobb County. Together they were to have four siblings. 1) Yancy W. Rice b: Sep. 5, 1867 in Cobb County 2) Monroe B. Rice 1868 b; in Cobb County 3) Lucy Ellender Rice b: Feb. 13, 1871 in Powder Springs Cobb County 4) Earley W. Rice b: May 1874 in Cobb County
