Pension records show: James enlisted March 3, 1863 at Falls City, NE; serving in Company "L", 2nd Nebraska Calvary; discharged December 22, 1863 with the rank of Private.
File for Disability March 23, 1863......James contacted a "La King Cold while on a march form Omaha to Falls City during a blizzard and snow storm, cold settled in his lungs and resulted in hemorrhage and spitting of blood". and "contacted lung trouble and rheumatism by being compedded to shovel snow". Statement by John Brinegar "James was a sound man and never knew him to be sick a day, until after he came home from army".
James wife Jemima was under the age of 18 when they were married March 18, 1893 in the residence of W. McCord Gilmore, M.G. George Crossen, guardian and curator of Jemima F. Stockdale gave his consent to said marriage.....Note the birthday given by Jemima Frances on the "Declaration for Widow's Pension" is February 15, 1875...this makes her age over 18 at time of marriage to James ??
August 22, 1927......T.A. Prouse a practicing Physician in Greenfield, Dade county, MO examined James C. Rice, a Civil War Veteran and pensioner, it was found that his mental condition is such that he must have an attendant at all time, thus he was confined to State Hospital No. 3 at Nevada, MO.
