At about 5.15 last evening, Mr. John. Haslitt, Customs officer, noticed the body of a man floating near the Glasgow Wharf. He had others throw a rope round the body and drew it in to the wharf, and on Constable Cookery's arrival it was drawn out of the water and conveyed to the morgue. The body had the appearance of having been in the water about four or five hours, and there was no indication of how the man came by his end. The body was identified this afternoon by several persons as that of James Robertson, of No. 3, Banks-terrace. It seems that he left his home about 6 p.m. on Sunday, and did not return, and it was believed he had stopped with relatives. How he came to be in the water is a matter of conjecture, but as he was an old-age pensioner it is not likely he suffered foul play at the hands of any one having robbery as a motive. Dr. Teare will make an external examination of the body. There seems to be no reason for any suicidal intent; and apparently death was accidental. Deceased leaves a grown-up family. An inquest will be held at the morgue at 11 a.m. to-morrow by the Coroner.
