Notes about James given to Judi from Bill his son.

About his courtship with Alice E. Wright. They both lived in a boarding room house, James step mother did not want Franklin's Indian's around. So this is where he stayed when he wasn't working. Dad said he came into the house one day, and Alice was washing her hair in the sink. He came up and brushed a lock of her hair out of her face then kissed her. He said since they were both single, that maybe they should be single together. (his proposal)

James loved hitching a ride on the train. He had worked for the railroad building track. On day he left the house to get a loaf of bread and cigarettes and Alice didn't hear from him for 3 months. He called her from Tennesse. They were always moving. If Alice wanted to keep anything she would keep it packed. He would come in from work and tell her that they were moving.

Dad told me that James had lied about his age so that he could get into the service. He was stationed in Texas and rode horseback... so I am assuming that he was in a calvary of sorts. He was doing somekind of guard detail and fell asleep on his horse. The troops an horses are trained when a sandstorm comes in to lay the horse down and cover them both with a tarp to save their eyesight. With James being asleep when the storm hit, he was not able to get this done in time. The horse was put down and after being hospitalized he was discharged. Years later he lost one eye then the other. The doctors had him on morphine to ease the pain, but it shortened his life.
