James Sands (abt. 1690 - bef. 1747)

James Sands

Brother of Ann Sandys [half], Thomas Sands [half], Patience (Sands) Hodgkins [half] and Hannah (Sands) Bryant

Husband of Emma (Jepson) Sands — married 27 Oct 1714 in Boston, Massachusetts

Father of Betty Sands, Molly Sands, Thomas Sands, Ephraim Sands, Hannah (Sands) Carter, Mary (Sands) Stimson, Sarah Sands, John Sands, Ruth (Sands) Elden and Patience (Sands) Redlon

Died before 16 Apr 1747 in Biddeford, York County, Maine

Biography

Born ABT 1690. Estimated date based on marriage of 1714. [1] [2]

Marriage
Husband James Sands.
Wife Emm Jepson.
Marriage 27 OCT 1714. Boston, Massachusetts. [3] [4]

Died ABT 1745. Biddeford, York County, Maine. [5]

Probate: 18 APR 1745. [5]

Occupation: Cordwainer. [6]

Marriages: It is possible James Sands marriage to Emm Jepson was a second marriage. No record can be found of such a first marriage. However, FamilySearch Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639 -1915 show Betty and Molly Sands, both christened in Ipswich on 17 Oct 1711 with father named James Sands. [7]

James Sands parents: Ridlon writes in 1895 that James Sands came from England and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, but removed early to Biddeford, now Saco, Maine. (Ridlon provides no support for the England comment, and is probably not so since his mother Patience (Gibbins} Sands was born in New England. Perhaps the England comment comes from family tradition and may apply to James father)

James Sands made his will in 1745 naming wife Emma; eldest son James, daughter Patience who married Daniel Redlon; daughter Hannah wife of John Carter; daughter Mary wife of Ephraim Stimpson; daughter Ruth. Appointed executors probable sons Thomas and Ephraim. (Ridlon, G.T.. Saco Valley Settlements and Families (Portland, Maine: G.T. Ridlon, 1895,page 1133 ).

In 2011 The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, sets forth the possibility that John and Ann (Manning) Sandys were the parents of a son (first name unknown), born in 1670, who married Patience Gibbins, born about 1670, daughter of James and Dorcas (Seeley) Gibbins of Saco, Maine. The reasoning for this possible Sandys identification was (1) there was no other family using the spelling "Sands" between Boston and Maine, (2) some of James Sands children had first names found in the Sandys lines, (3) John Sandys held a mortgage on property in Falmouth, Maine. (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 165 [2011]:266-267, footnote 64 [https:/www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-registerimage?rId=143655542&volumeId=12636&pageName=266&filterQuery= digital copy]). Compiler's comment: It appears this possibility has been taken as fact and is used by many in their genealogies. This compiler does not accept it as fact, especially when Ridlon above writes James Sands came from England, although without proof, but probably a family tradition. [1] [8] [9]

Known children of James Sands and Emma Jepson (Birth order shown is undoubtedly incorrect):
Hannah Sands; b. circa 1724; baptized 13 Apr 1729 at Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts;
Emm Sands; baptized 13 Apr 1729.
Thomas Sands; baptized 13 Apr 1729.
Ephraim Sands; b. 25 Jan 1720 baptized 13 Apr 1729.
Betty Sands; baptized 27 Oct 1711.
Molly Sands baptized Oct. 27, 1711
Mary Sands; b. ca. 1726 at Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts; baptized 13 Apr 1729.
Sarah Sands b. ca. 1727
vii. James Sands; baptized 14 Apr 1729.
John Sands; b. ca. 1726 baptized 13 Apr 1729.
Ruth Sands b. 17 Nov 1729
Patience Sands b. ca 1730
Research note

It appears that 2 of Jame's children were baptized on 17 Oct 1711 and 7 on 13 April 1729. We can assume that they were children or young adults and not infants
