About James William Scott
The Wellington Leader December 22, 1938
Dodson Resident For Forty-eight Years Is Buried
Jim Scott Lived In 1 Territory, 2 States, 3 Counties Without Moving
James W. Scott, seventy six-year-old Dodson resident, died at his home there Monday, December 19, after a continuous residence of more than forty-eight years in that area. His death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Scott had been instrumental in the development of the area in which he lived, always standing for progress and advancement of his community, and for a number of years he had been a director in the First State Bank at Dodson. A brother, John Scott, with whom he came to this county, died at Dodson on December 3, of this year.
Funeral services for Mr. Scott were held at the Church of Christ in Dodson Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Minister Van Bonneau, pastor, in charge. Interment was in the Dodson cemetery. Pallbearers were H. P. Scott, S. H. Davis, I. N. Burk, Gilbert Hunt, Woodson Wilson and C. U. Allen. Flower bearers were Mrs. Z. O. McKinney, Mrs. B. A. Ricketts, Mrs. Elliott Wynn, Mrs. O. H. Hodel, Mrs. Van Bonneau, Mrs. Gilbert Hunt, Mrs. Norman Burk, Mrs. P. W. O'Brien, Mrs. Woodson Wilson, and Miss Gladys Scott.
Mr. Scott, known to his friends as Jim, was born in Lafayette County, Ark., on Sept. 22, 1862, the son of James A. and Martha Perry Scott. At the time of his death he was seventy-six years two months, and twenty-seven days of age.
On November 3, 1889 he was married to Miss Violine Barron in Texarkana, and but a short time later they came to this area. Mr. Scott homesteaded on the farm where he lived for the remainder of his life. At that time it was a part of the Indian Territory, but he often told friends how that he had lived in one territory, two states, and three counties, without ever having moved. Since then, Mr. and Mrs. Scott have been closely allied with the affairs of their area, and during the years made a host of friends, each of whom respected Mr. Scott for his fine character and high principles. During his residence here he engaged in farmning and stock raising. For a time he was road overseer of his precinct, while his farm was still located in Harmon County, Oklahoma, and for a number of years he had been a director in the First State Bank of Dodson.
Surviving are Mrs. Scott and the following children: Mrs. Mable Bennett, V. K. Scott of Dallas, Vernon L. Scott of Dodson, Mrs. Fred Moreman of Hereford and Stansell Scott of Hereford. A brother and sister, Mrs. E. H. Dodson and M. P. Scott, both of Dodson. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
