About James Shaw, Jr.
Aboard the barque William Bryan were 21-year-old James Shaw and Ann Lye. The pair, strangers before they boarded the sailing ship, were married soon after landing in New Plymouth in 1840.
The newlyweds had to adapt quickly to a new life in a raupo hut (built where the central women's restroom now stands beside the Huatoki) and had several months alone there, living off the scant rations of the settlement. Their home consisted of an earth floor, raupo and grass walls and had no windows, doors, or chimney.
The following year, James Shaw senior, his wife Jane and their six other children arrived on board the Amelia Thompson.
