In one of his children’s birth certificates George is recorded as a Journeyman Butcher. Is it reasonable to assume he served an apprenticeship in the family firm before he joined the army?
In 1934 he joined up and in the following year was posted to India with the 17th/21st Lancers. At the end of his military serviced he’d attained the highest non-commissioned rank of Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Major.
After leaving the army George and Gladys ran a newsagents/tobacconists shop. He then trained as a nurse and on becoming State Registered specialised in psychiatric nursing. He worked at Turner Village Hospital, Colchester and on his retirement in 1978 he was in charge of a unit on East Hill
