James Spittle, listed as aged 20 , occupation Farm Labourer, arrived on the ship "Whitby" which sailed London 27th April 1841 - arrived Wellington ( Port Nicholson) on Sept 8th 1841 and then Nelson on Nov 5th 1841. In 1859 a J. Spittal is listed as the Innkeeper of the Takaka Hotel and on the Motupipi Education Committee. It appears that fairly early on they changed the surname spelling from Spittle to Spittal.
