About James Stewart, tertius

JAMES STEWART tertius

James Stewart is the bastard son of James V, King of Scots, and Christine Barclay. The first reference to his existence is as the kingis son with Cristiane Barclay in 1533. On 28 October 1533 he was included in the remainder of the lands of Douglas, and in 1536 he was included in the remainder for the lands of Tantallon. James Stewart died in or shortly after 1536. [Peter D. Andersen, Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney, Lord of Shetland, 1533-1593 (John Donald, Edinburgh, 1982), pp. 1, 2, 156]

Translation by Bing:

It is alleged here that James is one of the nine ' illegitimate ' children known of King James V. This should be documented in more detail. Furthermore, where is the documentation of that ' ' is a correct Jamesson middle name with a non-Norwegian? It's true that Scots have had some naming tradition to include the father's name with the son ending.

A list (though documentation is missing, too) over the ' Illegitimate Children of King James V of Scotland ':

  1. Adam Stewart, (?-d. 20 June 1575), son of Lady Helen Stewart (daughter of John Stewart, Earl of Lennox, and Lady Elizabeth Stewart). Prior of Perth Charterhouse.
  2. James Stewart (c. 1529 – 25 Sep 1557), Commendator of Melrose and Kelso, son of Elizabeth Shaw.
  3. John Stewart, Lord Darnley (c. 1531 – November 1563), son of Elizabeth Carmichael. Prior of Coldingham?
  4. James Stewart (c. 1531-23 Jan 1570), 1st Earl of Moray, son of Margaret Erskine (daughter of John Erskine, 16th Earl of Mar)
  5. Sir Robert Stewart (c. 1532-4 Feb 1593), 1st Earl of Orkney and the Abbot of Holyrood Abbey, the son of Lady Eupheme Elphinstone (daughter of Alexander, Lord Elphinstone)
  6. James Stewart (b. between 1528 and 1542?; d. unknown), son of Christine Barclay
  7. Jean (or Jane) Stewart (c. 1533-7 Jan 1588), daughter of Elizabeth Beaton/Bethune (daughter of John Bethune, Lord Creich). Later married Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyll.
  8. Robert Stewart, junior, (d. 1581), Commendator of Whithorn, mother unknown.
  9. Margaret Stewart, mother unknown.

Our James, whom is claimed above to be the son of King James V of Scotland, could then be the son of Christine Barclay.

The illegitimate son of King James V Stuart of Scotland. But some uncertainty concerning the If this was the man who married Dorthea.

En oversikt (men dokumentasjon mangler også) over 'Illegitimate Children of King James V of Scotland':

  1. Adam Stewart, (? - d. 20 June 1575), son of Lady Helen Stewart (daughter of John Stewart, Earl of Lennox and Lady Elizabeth Stewart). Prior of Perth Charterhouse.
  2. James Stewart (c.1529 - 25 Sep 1557), Commendator of Melrose and Kelso, son of Elizabeth Shaw.
  3. John Stewart, Lord Darnley (c. 1531 - November 1563), son of Elizabeth Carmichael. Prior of Coldingham?
  4. James Stewart (c.1531 - 23 Jan 1570), 1st Earl of Moray, son of Margaret Erskine (daughter of John Erskine, 16th Earl of Mar)
  5. Sir Robert Stewart (c.1532 - 4 Feb 1593), 1st Earl of Orkney and Abbot of Holyrood Abbey, son of Lady Eupheme Elphinstone (daughter of Alexander, Lord Elphinstone)
  6. James Stewart (b.between 1528 and 1542?; d unknown), son of Christine Barclay
  7. Jean (or Jane) Stewart (c.1533 - 7 Jan 1588), daughter of Elizabeth Beaton/Bethune (daughter of John Bethune, Lord Creich). Later married Archibald Campell, Earl of Argyll.
  8. Robert Stewart, junior, (d. 1581), Commendator of Whithorn, mother unknown.
  9. Margaret Stewart, mother unknown.

Our James, whom is claimed above to be the son of King James V of Scotland, could then be the son of Christine Barclay.

Uekte sønn av King James V Stuart of Scotland. Men noe usikkerhet vedr. om dette var den mannen som Dorthea giftet seg med.
