About James Tandy of Churchill

Additional Curator's Notes:

There were several Tandy families living in Worcestershire, England, in the 16th century. The principle locations of these families are Churchill, Bretforton and Himbleton. Himbleton is about 14 miles from Churchill, while Bretforton is about 24 miles.There is only one James Tandy found but there are at least two different Henry Tandys. How these families are related has not yet been discovered.

As curator for this family, I have chosen to treat each family separately, and have used the town where they are found in their display names to differentiate between the families. Should we ever find proof of their connection, it is easy enough to link the families.

The surname Tandy was spelled phonetically during the 16th and 17th centuries. Variations include Tandy (as we know it today), Tandie and Tandye. Henry is written as Henry, Henrye, Henrie and Henricus (the Latin form of Henry). I have used whatever variation was found on the source document.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A record has been found for the marriage of James Tandy to Alice Clarcke in 1566. The marriage took place on May 25, in Churchill, Oswaldslow, Worcestershire, England. A record has been found for the burial of James Tandy, who died in October, 1598. He was buried at St. Michael's Anglican Church, Churchill (near Worcestor), Worcestorshire, England, on October 8, 1598. Given how small the town of Churchill was, it is highly likely these records are for the same man.
St. Michael's Church in Churchill still stands today. The church dates from the 14th century, and contains fragments of masonry from an earlier church building on the site. It was restored in 1863, and there was another restoration in 1910.
Web trees place his date of birth as 1550. This is unlikely. Boys of 16 were rarely married during the 16th century. He was probably born closer to 1540.
