About James Andrew Taylor
Obituary: James A. Taylor was born April 14, 1850 on the Piney River, near Slabtown, Texas Co, Mo. Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Cameron, in St. Louis, Mo., Apr. 1, 1928, at the age of 77 years, 11 months, 16 days. He was married to Miss Matilda P. Agee, Sept. 2, 1872. To this union two children were born: Mrs. Nannie Carlisle, of Tulare, Ca., and S. S. Taylor, who died a few years ago. His wife died Apr. 21, 1875. He was married the second time to Miss Sarah E. Scott, May 6, 1878. To this union seven children were born; Oscar and Arthur Taylor, deceased; Omra Taylor of Licking, Mo., Mrs. Cora Cameron, of St. Louis, Mo., Harry T. Taylor of Monroe, La., Mrs. Alva Stevenson, Tulare, Ca., and Charles Taylor, Davenport, Iowa. He had 25 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. His second wife died Apr. 27, 1910. He was married a third time to Mrs. Agnes Cameron, June 25, 1913, and she died May 5, 1923.
Mr. Taylor made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Cameron, after the death of his last wife, until she and her husband moved to St. Louis. After that he lived with his son Omra, at Licking, until last fall his daughter, Mrs. Carlisle, came to visit him and took him to her home in Calif. for a pleasure trip and for the winter in Calif., intending to return home in the early spring, but illness prevented the return trip. After an illness of several months, his daughter, Mrs. Cameron, went to be at his bedside and after remaining with him for a month, brought him back to St. Louis, and to the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium for an x-ray examination, but after five days in the hospital returned to her home.
Personally, I have known James A. Taylor as a friend, neighbor and a brother for more than half a century. To know him was to love him for his honesty, integrity and uprightness of life. Truly a good man is gone.
The body was brought back to Licking for burial and remained overnight at the home of his son, Omra. The writer had charge of the funeral services, assisted by Rev. Thompson, pastor of the M.E. Church. Boone Creek Cemetery.
