James Thomson, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (McKinney) Thomson, was born 1724 in East Windsor, CT. He had one known brother, Samuel Thomson, born 1728 in East Windsor, married Eleanor McCray, had four children.
His father, Samuel, was born 1691 in Scotland, the third child of William and Margaret Thomson, was 29 years of age when he arrived in America in 1720.
Note, the change in spelling of the name "Thomson" to "Thompson" was gradual, but in this family the longer spelling prevailed in all lines, since about 1800. However, during his life time, James used the name "Thomson" as the various records reflect as well as his name on his tombstone.
James married Elizabeth McKnight and had ten children, all born in Melrose, East Windsor, CT:
1. Colonel William Thomson/Thompson, born 17 November 1762, married Margaret McKinney and later Tamar Holton.
2. Samuel Thomson/Thompson, born 2 November 1763, married Mehitable McKinney.
3. George Thomson/Thompson, born 8 October 1765, died 17 September 1776.
4. John McKnight Thomson/Thompson, born 8 January 1768, married Sabra Allen.
5. Robert Thomson/Thompson, born 8 December 1769, died 3 October 1776.
6. David Thomson/Thompson, born 1771, died 29 September 1776.
7. James Thomson/Thompson, born 1773, died 3 October 1776.
8. Charles Thomson/Thompson, born 16 September 1776, married Sally Holton.
9. Elizabeth Thomson/Thompson, born 20 May 1778, married Robert Morrison.
10. James Thomson/Thompson, born 29 January 1780, died 1 May 1829, unmarried.
In "Revolutionary Rolls" published by the Connecticut Historical Society, 1902, is the following record: "James Thompson served as a Private in a Company which marched from East Windsor for the Relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm, April 1775". James Thompson was then 51 years old and the only person of that name among the descendants of William and Margaret living at that time.
James Thomson died on 20 June 1790 at age 66.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Nov 9 2021, 2:14:39 UTC
