James Townshend was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England.
James Edwin Townshend, son of Edwin Townshend and Sophy Rose, was born in 1857 in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. [1]

James married Rebecca Rosa Carson in 1880 in Geraldton, Western Australia. [2]

He died in 1912, aged 56 years, at Mount Magnet, Western Australia. [3] [4] His death was reported in the Mount Magnet Miner and Lennonville Leader (WA : 1896 - 1926) Sat 5 Oct 1912 Page 2 [5]

OBITUARY.
We regret to have to record the death of Mr. James Edwin Townshend, of Wandarri, which occurred at the Mt. Magnet Hospital on Wednesday morning from a complication of complaints. Deceased had been in the hospital since the 16th ult. Mr. Townshend, whose brother was at one time part owner of Coodardy station, was 56 years of age and a pioneer of the Murchison- He built and owned for a good number of years the Settlers' Arms Hotel at Carnarvon. During the past four years he had resided in the Wandarri district and was working with Mr. R. M. Miller at the Moonlight G.M.L, for some time previous to entering the hospital. He leaves three sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon the remains being interred in the Mt. Magnet Cemetery. The coffin-bearers were Messrs. C. Burt, R. M. Miller, W. M'Intyre and W. Cassidy. Wreaths and floral tributes were sent by Mr. and Mrs. Meadowcroft and family, Mr. and Mrs. Drew, Mr. and Mrs. Burt, Mr. and Mrs. M'lntyre, and Mr. and Mrs. Quick. The Rev. A. J. Wilkins officiated at the grave and the mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. Kennedy.
