DOB is also sometimes seen as 03/23/1856, this causes legitimacy issues as Alexander was not married until November 1855.

In this document I have used the more common 08/23/1856, but a hand written 3 can look an awful lot like an 8. Documents may have been changed to protect the honor of both Houses! This would not be the first time this trick was employed....

James Jerome Webb "Jr" is said to have gone by the moniker JJ. This would naturally lead people of the time to lend him the Jr lable as it was often the case that the first initial and the letter J were used in combination in such a manner to represent Jr. Such as in the case of Laurence "LJ" Talbot Jr or Theodore Erasmus "TJ" Dixon Jr, both contemporaries of James Jerome "JJ" Webb.

Also James "Jr"'s Grandfather is named James, while his father Alexander was embroiled in Civil War duties it is probable that young James lived with his grandfather. Hence the Jr. may have been to distinguish between Grandfather and grandchild, in the likely event that Alexander did not return from the war.
