James enlisted 25 Nov 1861 as a private. On 25 Nov 1861 he enlisted into Company B, of the 31st Mass. Infantry Regiment. He re-enlisted on 18 Feb 1864 and mustered out on 9 Sept 1865 in Mobile, Alabama.
