2nd Lieut. James K. Wilson was a member of the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery, Company H. The regiment mustered in at St. Paul and Rochester in 1864 and 1865. The regiment manned the heavy guns and fortifications of Chattanooga. It was considered an important assignment as it was highly probable that General Hood would attempt to retake the city. The regiment remained there until the war ended. Members of the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery were mustered out on September 27, 1865.
In 1860 James Wilson married Harriet Mary Haymond (1837-1893). At the time of his death he was a resident of the Minnehaha Falls Soldiers Home in Minneapolis.
